Liverpool, Dortmund, Napoli, Monaco are the unorthodox leaders of their championships so far, alongside Barcelona in Spain and FC Porto in Portugal while in Russia CSKA Moskva sits atop the Russian Premier League, ahead of a revitalized Spartak Moskva.
La Liga
Barcelona continues its onslaught at the top of La Liga with a 3-2 away win at Valencia but shares top spot with Atlético Madrid, Villarreal and Real Madrid, all with 9 points from the first three games. Atlético won 2-1 at Real Sociedad, Villarreal came away from Pamplona with a 3-0 victory against Osasuna and Real beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1
Premiership
Liverpool leads with 9 points from 3 games, 2 ahead of Chelsea. Liverpool’s victory against Manchester United (1-0) after Chelsea forced a goalless draw at Old Trafford, leaves last season’s champions out of the top places, for now.
Bundesliga
Borussia Dortmund leads with maximum points from the first four games (12), two ahead of last season’s champions Bayern Munich, now trained by Pepe Guardiola. Bayern drew 1-1 at Freiburg, Dortmund beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 away.
Serie A
Five teams have 6 points from the first two games: SSC Napoli, Inter, Roma, Fiorentina and Juventus.
Ligue 1
In France, for now the Championship is happening outside Paris, the leaders being AS Monaco (10 points after 4 games), one ahead of Olympique de Marseille and AS Saint-Étienne.
Primeira Liga
FC Porto sits atop the Portuguese league with 9 points from the first three games, taking advantage of the draw between Sporting CP and SL Benfica at Sporting’s stadium (Alvaláxia XXI) with one goal apiece, FC Porto beating Paços de Ferreira away 1-0, goal by Jackson Martinez. Sporting is second and Estoril Praia third, both with 7 points.
Russian Premier League (after 7 games)
CSKA Moskva leads with 17 points, three ahead of Spartak Moskva, Zenit and Rostov. CSKA beat Amkar Perm 2-1, Zenit beat Lokomotiv Moskva by the same result, Spartak the same against bottom-placed club Tom Tomsk, while a seenth-minute Milic goal earned Rostov a draw away at Dinamo Moskva.
Totalists in Europe include Besiktas JK in the Turkish Super League (9 points from 3 games), Standard de Liege in Belgium (18 points from 6 games), Olimpiacos in Greece (9 from 3 games).
In Armenia FC Pyunik and FC Mika lead with 8 points from four games; in Azerbaijan, Olimpik-Süvälan and Qarabag lead with 12 points from 5 games; in Belarus after 22 games, Shakhtyor Soligorsk leads on 49 points, one ahead of BATE Borisov. After 25 games in Kazakhstan, FC Aktobe and FS Astana both have 27 points.
In Ukraine after 8 games, the top four are Metalist Kharkiv (20 points), Shakhtar Donetsk (19), Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and Chornomorets Odesa on 17 points each.
